I think the cafe (as the French and Belgians and many others on the continent practice it) must be one of the great cultural achievements of mankind. No where else can unemployed people spend their time consuming small amounts of alcohol and large numbers of cigarettes for so many hours of the day with so few people asking questions about just what the hell they are up to.
